I grew up two minutes from the water and learned to surf on my uncle's old longboard. Now I'm on the qualifying tour, chasing a spot with the best in the world.

My uncle pushed me into my first wave when I was five. These days I teach his grandkids, coach a girls' surf club on Saturdays, and pick up plastic every time I walk back up the beach. The ocean has given me everything, so I try to give a little back.

Do you give lessons?

Why goofy foot?
Right foot forward. My uncle's goofy too, so I never stood a chance.
How is a heat scored?
Five judges score every wave out of 10. The highest and lowest are dropped, the rest averaged, and your two best waves are added together.
