a field guide by neighbors with gloves and buckets

Friends ofMill Creek

Five years ago you couldn't see the bottom of Mill Creek. Then a few neighbors started showing up on the first Saturday of the month. Turn the page and watch what happened.

Bring a friend. We bring the gloves.

Two hours, then coffee at the bridge. Kids love it, dogs love it more. We've never had a cleanup where someone didn't find something strange. Last month it was a bowling ball.

Cleanup bingo

Every first Saturday, kids get a bingo card. Spot it, stamp it. Five in a row wins first pick of the donuts. Try it: tap what you'd find.

Call of the organizer

Mei, who organizes it. Heard most first Saturdays near the Elm Street bridge. Often says: "The herons came back."

The first time, it was me and my neighbor and two rakes. We filled nine bags and you couldn't even tell. But we kept coming back. Last spring a heron was standing right where we pulled out that shopping cart. I cried a little. Don't tell anyone.

A real voice note, recorded for this sample. On a real Community Webfolio, it's the organizer's own voice.

$25 buys a family's worth of gloves

We're all volunteers. Money goes to gloves, grabbers, bags and the dumpster fee the city charges us.
