a neighborhood pantry · since 2014
Pull up a chair. Everyone eats on Thursday.
Every Thursday at five, the basement of St. Brendan's turns into the busiest kitchen on the block. Groceries to take home, a hot plate to eat here, and nobody asks why you came.
About twelve pairs of hands. No experience needed. Wear closed shoes. Teenagers welcome with a grown-up.

"It began with one pot of chili."
Ten years ago I made too much chili and knocked on a few doors. Six people came. The next week, twenty. Now it's a hundred and eighty, and I still make the chili. You don't need a plan to start feeding people. You just need a big pot.

What goes home in a bag
Every family leaves with a bag packed for about four dinners. Volunteers pack them in an assembly line that Marcus times with a kitchen timer.

First time here?
Do I need to bring anything?
Just yourself. Bags too, if you have them.
Do I need ID or paperwork?
No. No forms, no questions. Just your first name for the coffee cup, if you want.
Can I bring my kids?
Please do. There's a coloring table and the good cookies.
Is it only for church members?
No. Everyone eats on Thursday. That's the whole idea.
Notes from the table

Five dollars feeds a neighbor on Thursday.
Every dollar goes to groceries and gas for the pickup van. Our books are open, and you can ask Denise anything.
